Why I love  Scarisbrick!

15th November 2022

Scarisbrick holds claim to being the largest parish in Lancashire, covering roughly 8,000 acres of arable farmland stretching between Ormskirk and Southport.  With a relatively scattered population of just under 4,000 people, most residents reside within the six delightful semi-rural hamlets nestled within open countryside.

For a village with no centre, Scarisbrick boasts a long and fascinating history that can be traced back hundreds of years.  Once the largest lake in England, Martin Mere was drained over the course of many centuries to create some of the most fertile agricultural land in the country.

The iconic Scarisbrick Hall was the ancestral home of the Scarisbrick family for many generations with its iconic gothic style tower being designed by the same architect responsible for Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster.  With the family long since moved out, the hall is now a well-respected and award-winning independent school. Locally there are several primary schools, with St Mary’s and St Marks’ both being rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted.

The Leeds-Liverpool Canal offers stunning views of local scenery and wildlife and is a fantastic place to take a peaceful evening or weekend stroll.  Arriving nearly 250 years ago, the canal meanders through the parish from east to west connecting what was then the port city of Liverpool to industrial centres in Wigan and further afield.  Keep an eye out for the Second World War Pillbox at Heaton’s Bridge constructed to help defend the country and keep invaders at bay!

There are plenty of good country pubs and restaurants to pick from, with fine local fayre ranging from traditional ‘pub grub’ to Indian and Thai cuisine.  Hurlston Hall is located on the outskirts of Ormskirk and boasts a championship golf course along with a driving range, gymnasium and leisure complex.
If you want to know anything more about Scarisbrick and why I love this place so much, then please do not hesitate to get in touch.
